U.S. Import Report Q2 2025

  • In Q2 2025, total imports reached 11.6 million TEUs, reflecting a (17.4%) decrease compared to the previous quarter and an increased of 4.0% compared to the same quarter last year.
  • Year-to-date imports stand at 25.7 million TEUs, reflecting an 12.7% increase compared to the same period last year.


CargoFax presents the U.S. maritime import report for Q2 2025. This report covers key metrics such as shipments, containers, TEUs, and total tonnage, comparing quarter-over-quarter (Q1 2025), year-over-year (Q2 2024), and year-to-date (January 1st – June 30th).

Additionally, the report highlights trends in commodities, countries of origin, ports of origin, U.S. ports of arrival. Focusing exclusively on maritime imports, this analysis provides valuable insights into the dynamics of U.S. import flows.

It is important to note that the data can change as Bills of Lading amendments come in, and the information presented is not final; it represents all BOL that pass through federal agency records.

Import Volumes

In Q2 2025, total import shipments reached 6.4 million, decreased (23.0%) from the previous quarter. Container volumes followed a similar trend, decreased (21.8%) to 7.5 million. TEU volumes decreased (17.4%), with 11.6 million processed. Additionally, the weight of imported goods decreased (4.8%), totaling 188.8 billion. These figures indicate mixed performance in U.S. maritime import activity for the quarter.

Compared to the previous year, import shipments increased 12.5%. This increased is accompanied by significant increases in other metrics: TEU volumes rose by 4.0%, container counts increased by 6.5%, and the weight of imported goods saw a 0.3% increase.

For the year-to-date (YTD), U.S. maritime imports presented a positive trend compared to the same period in 2024. Shipments grew by 40.5%, totaling 14.6 million. Additionally, container volumes increased by 20.0%, reaching 17.0 million, while TEUs also saw a growth by 12.7%, with 25.7 million recorded. Furthermore, total tonnage increased by 7.4%, totaling 387.2 billion.

Commodities

Grouping commodities by HS sections, Machinery & Appliances ranked as the top imported commodity category, representing 12.7% of total imports. Miscellaneous Articles followed at 12.5%, and Textiles came in third with 11.2%.

By HS chapters, HS-8609 | Containers & Transport Equipment led with 4.9% of total imports. High-growth sectors included Prepared Foodstuffs & Beverages, Vegetable Products.

Quarter-over-quarter, the top-performing commodities were HS-7403 | Refined Copper & Alloys, HS-2716 | Electrical Energy, and HS-7402 | Unrefined Copper & Anodes, recording growth rates of 428.4%, 366.7%, and 329.4%, respectively. In contrast, HS-5507 | Artificial Staple Fibres, HS-5311 | Woven Fabrics Of Other Vegetable Textile Fibres, and HS-2603 | Copper Ores And Concentrates showed declines, dropping by (95.7%), (90.7%), and (88.0%), respectively.

Additionally, HS-8609 | Containers & Transport Equipment saw a significant 14.8% increase quarter-over-quarter, with a notable 23.0% growth year-over-year. Its volume of 559.3K TEUs represents 4.9% of total commodity imports.

Countries of Origin

China remained the dominant country of origin, accounting for 37.7% of total U.S. TEU imports with 4.4 million processed in Q2 2025. South Korea and Vietnam followed, contributing 8.7% and 7.9%, respectively.

Ghana recorded the largest YOY increase at 1,868.4%.

Ports of Origin

Yantian led as the top port of origin, handling 1.5 million and representing 12.5% of total volume. Shanghai and Busan; Pusan followed with 9.1% and 8.6% respectively.

Leningrad showed the strongest QoQ growth at 26,800.0%.

Key Ports of Entry

The Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles led the nation in TEU volume, processing 2,121.7K and 2,105.8K TEUs, respectively. Compared to the previous quarter, the Port of Long Beach had a decline of (44.0%) while the Port of Los Angeles recorded a decline of (24.6%).

The Port of New York/Newark Area, Newark followed, handling 1,652.3K TEUs, marking a 5.4% increase from the previous quarter. The Port of Savannah recorded 917.7K TEUs and declined by 7.7%. Lastly, Port Houston completed the top five ports, processing 839.6K TEUs with a decline rate of 0.4%.

While most major ports saw mixed performance, other ports experienced growth quarter over quarter, including Port of New York/Newark Area, Newark, Port of Seattle, and Port of Miami. These ports averaged 802.4K TEUs and saw increases of 5.4%, 9.7%, 5.0%, respectively.

U.S. Ports of Arrival

Long Beach, California led the nation in TEU volume, processing 2.1 million (18.2%). Los Angeles, California followed with 2.1 million (18.1%), and New York/Newark Area, Newark, New Jersey handled 1.7 million (14.2%).

Fort Myers, Florida saw the highest QoQ gain at 800.0%.

Shipping Lines

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company led the market with 16.1% share of total imports, handling 1.9 million. Maersk Line and Compagnie Maritime d'Affretement (CMA) followed with 11.3% and 10.4% shares, respectively.

The top five shipping lines accounted for 56.7% of total TEU volumes, while the top 10 captured 86.3% of the U.S. import market.
